3 ways to make it easier to maintain an organized home

Have you ever organized a space, felt great about how it looked, and then watched it fall apart a few weeks later?

Sometimes the problem isn't that you're not trying hard enough. It's that the system itself is too difficult to maintain.

As a professional home organizer, I design systems that are easy to use, even on the busiest days. That often comes down to one simple principle: remove unnecessary steps. Every extra step between you and putting something away is another opportunity for a system to break down.

Here are three ways to make your home organizing systems easier to maintain.

1. Choose function over perfection

A drawer of perfectly folded workout clothes might look beautiful, but if you're never going to fold your laundry that way during a busy week, it probably isn't the right system for you.

For some clients, I've created what I call a "no-fold bin." Instead of carefully folding workout clothes, socks, or pajamas, they can put clean laundry straight into a bin and grab what they need when they're getting dressed.

I have a similar setup in my own closet for sweatshirts. I'm always cold, so it's easy to toss clean sweatshirts into a basket, grab one when I need it, and put it back when I'm done.

It's a small change, but it eliminates an unnecessary step and makes the system easier to maintain.

Takeaway: An organizing system doesn't have to look perfect to work well. Choose a solution that fits how you actually live.

2. Keep categories simple

Sometimes we make organizing harder than it needs to be by creating too many specific categories.

I see this often in pantries. You might have separate labeled bins for chocolate candy and sour candy. But what happens when you buy Twizzlers?

When categories become too specific, putting things away requires more thought than it should. Eventually, people stop paying attention to the labels and put things wherever there's room.

Broader categories are often easier to maintain. Instead of separating every type of snack, you might group items into categories such as sweet snacks and salty snacks.

The goal is to make it obvious where something belongs, so everyone in the household can put things away without having to think too hard about it.

Takeaway: Create categories that are broad enough to accommodate what you actually own, including the things you haven't bought yet.

3. Don't let aesthetics make your life harder

It's easy to see a beautifully organized pantry on Instagram and think your own pantry needs matching containers, carefully decanted ingredients, and perfectly coordinated labels.

But before recreating that look, consider whether it would actually make your life easier.

If you don't want to spend time refilling containers every week, transferring cereal and crackers out of their original packaging may create more work than it's worth. If you can easily find what you need in the packaging things come in, there's no reason to change it just for the sake of appearance.

Of course, beautiful storage solutions can be useful when they serve a purpose. Baskets can contain loose items, clear containers can make supplies easier to see, and labels can help everyone know where things belong.

The important thing is to choose products and systems that improve how you use your space, rather than adding extra tasks to maintain a particular look.

Takeaway: A system can be beautiful and still be the wrong system for you. Prioritize function, and let aesthetics follow.

Make the easy choice the best choice

Ultimately, most of us are busy. When we're tired or rushing out the door, we're likely to choose whatever requires the least effort.

That's why the best organizing systems aren't necessarily the most elaborate. They're the ones that make it easy to put things away, find what you need, and keep your home functioning well over time.

At Edit & Organize, I help households create thoughtful, practical organizing systems that work with their spaces and routines. Whether you're organizing a closet, simplifying a pantry, or rethinking how your home functions, small changes can make everyday life easier.
